In Tel Aviv you will stay up all night, until the dawn of another cloudless day finds you wandering home along the beach, shoes in hand. In the middle of past local olive oils and cheeses with handwritten labels, watermelons like boulders and garlic bulbs as big as your fist. Shiny red fruits are heaped next to fat bunches of herbs, green and aromatic.

Inhale deeply at your peril: the sweetness of basil and strawberries is ambushed by pungent fish and coppery raw meat. Duck out before you reach the top, where the fruits give way to stalls of cheap underpants, and onto Nachalat Binyamin. On Fridays and Tuesdays this paved street hosts an arts and crafts market, worth a visit more for its atmosphere and street theatre than its dubious handicrafts.
